K2
8611m
K2 is the highest peak in
Karakoram Range of Pakistan and the 2nd highest in the world, with an
elevation
of
8611m (28251ft). K2 is thought by many climbers to be the ultimate climb.
The local name of K2 is Chogori, which in Balti language, means the king
of mountains. K2 is situated on Pak-China border in mighty karakoram.
Its giant pyramid peak towers in isolation, 12,000 feet above th e
wide Concordia glacial field at the head of Baltoro Glacier. Six equally
steep ridges flank the sheer icy summit; each of its faces presents a
maze of precipices and overhangs. K2 was long considered unclimbable.
Expeditions for K2 in 1902, 1909, 1934, 1938 and 1953 were all
unsuccessful attempts. In 1954 an Italian expedition, which was led by
Professor, Ardito Desio with other 12 climbers and 6 scientists, try
their luck on this peak. 2 members of the expedition Lino Lacedelli and
Achille Compagnoni reached the summit on 31st
July 1954, for the first time. K2 is the only major mountain in the
world, which has surveyor’s notation as its common name K2 (K stands for
Karakoram and 2 means; it is the second peak of the world).
