Broad Peak is the 4th
highest mountain in Pakistan and the 12th highest
in the world with an elevation of 8047m and it is located in the Karakoram
Range. The mountain is located along the western Baltoro Glacier between
K2 and
Gasherbrum IV. William Martin Conwey a British explorer introduced
the name of Broad Peak during his expedition in 1892.
The summit ridge of the peak is
almost 2 km long and therefore British explorer William Martin Conwey
thought Broad Peak was a suitable name.
The first ascent was made by an
Austrian expedition in 1957. Four members of the expedition summitted the
peak without using oxygen: Kurt Diemberger, Hermann Buhl, Fritz
Winterstellar and Marcus Schmuck.
Base Camp for Broad Peak is a
short 2 hours walk from Concordia and it is only a couple hours from K2
Base Camp, which might be visited in anticipation of further trips. Base
Camp is set at 5000m.
Broad Peak is one of the easier
8000m peaks in the world.
